The design of earthquake-resistant buildings (known as the SAA Earthquake Code)
standard by Standards Australia, 10/31/1979

Category:

Description

Contains rules for design of buildings, parts of buildings, and fixing of non-structural elements and mechanical services in building areas of low and medium seismicity in Australia. A map (A0 size, see AS 2121 M) and list of major towns are given indicating those parts of Australia for which the design rules apply. This zoning is related to seismic activity recorded to date in Australia, and is based on criteria related to worldwide experience of building performance and behaviour under actual earthquake loading. The design rules are intended to provide a reasonable assurance of survival in buildings under earthquake loading in each of the zones identified on the seismic zone map. A separate part of the Standard is provided for each zone, with an introductory general part and a part on structural analysis applicable to all zones, where zone requirements include the execution of such an analysis. The Standard does not apply to special structures requiring consideration of earthquake events of very low probability, such as nuclear power stations, dams, or industrial or commercial buildings with unusual hazards or high economic consequences of failure. Non-engineered domestic construction is also effectively excluded. The Standard includes an explanatory ‘Commentary’ for most of the rules and appendices.
